After doing a unit of study with her class on the significance of the events of 9/11 and Patriots Day, KDS 4th grade teacher Shelby Edmonds wanted to give the students a way to personally honor their heroes. She reached out to parents and others on social media asking for the names of heroes such as military personnel, firemen, policemen, nurses, etc. The responses included 26 names and addresses ranging from locals to those as far away as New York.
Students discussed how these people are brave and courageous doing what they do for their communities and country. In their language class, the students had been working on writing friendly letters and this seemed to be the perfect opportunity to honor the sacrifices of their heroes while practicing their letter-writing skills. Each student wrote their letter, addressed the envelope, placed the postage stamp, and sealed the envelope all on their own. They were really excited to get to actually mail the letters themselves and are hopeful to get some responses from their heroes.
