The KDS DAR School Future Farmers of America (FFA) began growing cilantro and lettuce over the summer for the cafeteria using the Agri-science Department's indoor hydroponics lab.
Did you know that hydroponics means gardening without soil? This allows students to hydroponically grow herbs and vegetables all year long. Hydroponics uses less water than traditional soil-based systems and allows for faster growth and higher yields.
FFA students experimented growing cilantro with the Fork Farms tower and it has been very successful! On the first day of school, students were served delicious Latin American black beans which featured the fresh cilantro grown at KDS. The recipe comes from the Institute of Child Nutrition.
The classroom continues outside where you will find a variety of traditionally grown herbs and vegetables. Many of these plants were carefully propagated and nurtured inside the school's greenhouse before being planted outside. The results have yielded a bountiful harvest!
Agri-science is one of the many programs at KDS that can be supported by the Daughters of the American Revolution. If you or your chapter would like to support this "growing" program, please contact the KDS Administrative Office or email jhodges@nehp.net for more information.
