How do you make 16th-century Shakespearean drama feel urgent and personal for today’s students? At KDS DAR High School, Dr. Thomas’ English students recently ditched their traditional desks to step into the shoes of the Capulets and Montagues for a high-stakes round of "Character Speed Dating."
The activity transformed the classroom into a bustling social hub where students, embodying specific characters from Romeo and Juliet, circulated the room to meet their peers. Every round introduced a new set of questions, forcing students to think on their feet and stay in character.
By shifting from passive reading to active performance, students gain a deeper understanding of character motivation and conflict. This "speed dating" format requires a deep dive into the text, as students must defend their characters' choices and perspectives in real-time conversations.
As the school shared on their social media, the activity "turned out great," proving that a little bit of movement and a lot of imagination can make even the most tragic plays an engaging classroom highlight.
