The State Regent's Project for Colorado was to give all 49 Colorado DAR chapters one Freedom Sack of 10 patriotic books about the Revolutionary War. The chapters were then encouraged to deliver the sacks of books to local public schools, private schools, charter schools, homeschool cooperatives or libraries. The books were hand selected to be used with 5th grade level classrooms as that is when the American Revolution is taught in Colorado. The zippered totes each had a Colorado State Society, NSDAR America 250! logo on the side and an America 250! book plate in each book.
The Colorado State Society wrote an America 250! Celebration Grant to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and was awarded $500 towards the project. Thirty-six Colorado DAR chapters wrote similar grants that afforded them four additional Freedom Sacks. In all 3,000 books were ordered and 300 Freedom Sacks were distributed to 49 DAR chapters around the state. Included within each sack was a handwritten note in celebration of America's 250th birthday that encouraged teachers to promote the American Revolution in their classroom. There was so much excitement about this project that through donations, each chapter received an additional bonus sack.
KDS is proud to receive one of these fabulous Freedom Sacks! The books were delivered to the Middle School Library and also to Ms. Campbell's 5th grade history class. These books will serve as valuable teaching aides and promote literacy and learning in the classroom. We are so thankful for this gift and applaud the Daughters of the Colorado State Society for their great work!
